Karyn Hecht
Professor of Communications | Writing and Literature
Before I accepted the teaching job at Moody, I earned a B.A. in English from Houghton College, NY, and an M.A. in Communications from Wheaton Graduate School, IL. After graduation, I claimed that I would never do the following: teach, work for a newspaper, or commute into a city by train like my father did for 40 years. The Lord had other plans.
In January 1987, I said ‘yes’ to teaching writing classes at Moody.
I live in the Chicago suburbs, so I have commuted by train for all of these years! I was blessed to be adviser to the Moody Student newspaper (that was its title back then) for 14 years. The staff each year became like family—we learned a lot together. Also I enjoyed theatre; I co-directed a variety of plays, and I directed the first full-length drama at Moody: “Our Town.”
Eventually I taught courses like American Literature, Intro to Print Media, News Writing, Editing for Publication, and Listening for God in Fiction. I am still teaching College Writing and Research Writing, as well as Editing and Listening for God in Fiction.
I was also privileged to receive the 2012 Alumni Faculty Citation Award. The Lord has truly blessed me in getting to know and being known by so many students over 70+ semesters!
